Understanding social media and its impact in today’s business is mission critical, I believe. As my daily in-house tasks grow and my time becomes more valuable, I couldn’t see possibly see how this ‘social’ medium could benefit me.
I was clearly missing something.
Here’s how. I’ve had an on-going struggle with a AT&T that was not moving towards acceptable resolution. The problem continued no matter what they did. There was a simple fix but AT&T was not about to budge from their ‘policy’. Really more of an equipping/empowering issue, but whatever.
In my frustration, I tweeted to my community and pointed the message to AT&T and Verizon. It was a dig to AT&T. They quickly and appropriately reached out extending an offer to assist. Verizon did the same. They were eager to the grab the business.
The issue has since been resolved with AT&T and life goes on.
Not more than a day later I tweeted to my followers a pointed message to Sony about my new e-readers. Sony quickly reached out and sent me a $25 gift card to the online reader store. Very cool! All I did was compliment the product and share my experience with friends.
Social media is huge with the aforementioned companies and it’s viral. It reaches folks on their turf, its fun, usually friendly and non-intrusive. I’ve discovered new revenue streams and opportunities in business by inviting this medium into my daily structure.
If you’re not considering its uses, you should be. It’s amazing what you can accomplish.
