It’s a loaded question. And it’s one that I often get asked. I may not necessarily have the right answer for you, but I’m certain that I can answer this for myself. That said, I’ll simply share my experience.
God, Family and Work. Those are my priorities. Sometimes work has to come before family because I have to support and feed my family. But rest assured when my family needs me, I’m there. And when I say family I mean the folks in my home.
By no means am I a religious man. In fact, I loathe religion. I believe that ‘Christians’ make the best argument against Christianity. And I believe (absolutely) that God had and has a plan for me to prosper. Not financially (although he has) but in all aspects of life. Plans for me to be rich in my family and friends. Plans to be happy, joyous and free.
For years I’ve told the men that I mentor one of my core beliefs. “My job is not who I am. It’s how I pay the bills”. My identity is not grounded in my job or career. Whenever you meet someone new at a social gathering with friends and neighbors, what does the new acquaintance ask you? Typically it’s “what do you do?”. I love that question because it allows me to share a lot. And to catch that person off guard. “What do I do?” I smoke and collect cigars. I travel a ton. I read, write and speak. I date my daughters. I date my wife.
You see, I do a lot. And my job is not who I am. It’s just how I pay the bills.
I also train, equip and mentor others in business and in life. I’m no expert in either.
God has blessed me mightily and shows me daily the gifts and graces that he’s given me.
2 Timothy 2:2 says this……and entrust what you heard me say in the presence of many others as witnesses to faithful people who will be competent to teach others as well.
That’s a pretty clear direction. Trust what I’ve heard (or experienced or believe) and share it with others.
PASS THE TORCH. I’m commissioned to and I have a responsibility to raise up the next generation of difference makers. I don’t need the bible to tell me that but I’m glad that it does.
This is MY purpose. Equip others. Expand my territory by expanding their territory.
Many years ago in business, I was chasing the dollar. It was all about how much I could make and I kept to myself. If someone on my team needed help, I ignored it. I made the money and I was empty. I can remember the instant that changed. It was in reading 2 Timothy 2:2 and realizing that I needed to pass the torch. Okay, it was actually realizing that I needed to do something different. Like quit relying totally on self. Pour into others and do it unselfishly. So I did. More unwillingly than ready……but I did it.
My ego told me I didn’t need to that. My pride told me I didn’t want to do that. Both ego and pride got their asses handed to them. And everything in my life changed.
There’s been 3 moments of clarity, I mean real meaningful moments of clarity in my life. This was one of them.
I began mentoring other men, sharing what worked for me and what experience I’d garnered.
In business, I suddenly had 10 folks following me and then it grew to 62. I started chasing relationships rather than money. And I grew in so many ways.
What’s YOUR purpose? Are you equipping or hindering others?
